Planning Your Kayak Trip
Please send us a message and we will email the boating waiver for your e-signature via Authentisign.
Check the water level here.
A water level of 5.5 feat is considered danger level for boaters, as defined by the State of Maryland. Conditions are extremely hazardous. Over 2 feet is considered cautious.
Please also read the boating safety on the upper Potomac brochure produced by the state of Maryland.
Life jackets and oars are in the game shed. Kayak paddles are located on the side of the game shed.
Kayaks
We have two single Kayaks, a Double Kayak, and two 3-person Canoes for your use. The yellow kayak is for advanced/experienced kayakers. It is the single-person yellow Wavesport
Transporting the Kayaks
For transporting the boats we have a “MaxxHaul 70231 Hitch Mount Truck Bed Extender”. It’s in the game shed by the life jackets in two pieces. It’s possible to use a luggage rack as well. Please be sure to secure the boats well. If you have any questions please call.
Make sure you coordinate transportation back to your car!
Launching the Kayaks
We recommend starting upstream of the property and putting in here Lander Boat Ramp in Jefferson, MD 21755. There are also longer trips available either from Brunswick, Harpers Ferry, or by leaving from our property and heading south to Whites Ferry.
The Trip
Explore and enjoy!
If you are finishing your trip at Point of Rocks boat ramp, stay to the right after Point of Rocks bridge (see image below). If you are getting out at the house, stay to the right after Point of Rocks bridge. The property is about 15-30 minutes after you go under bridge (varies based on speed). See image below. Pull the kayaks up to the first hill and we will retrieve them and put them away on your check-out day. Please put away life jackets, oars and paddles.
Where to Get Out
You can get out directly at the property or Point of Rocks boat ramp. This trip takes about an hour in the water (plan on a total of 2 by the time you drop the boats off, pull them out and get your car).
MULTIPLE Kayak Trips
If you are going to go on multiple trips it is easier to get out at the boat ramp rather than haul the boats up from the water by our house. If you just want to go once (or for the last trip) you can leave the boat at the first hill over to the side near the fence or tree line so it is not visible from the bottom (it should be on the grass). We will then go and pick it up when you check out. It is certainly possible to kayak in the water by out house; however, it is a lot of work.
Swimming in the Potomac
We are routinely asked whether it is ok to swim in the Potomac. It is not safe to swim in the lower Potomac (south of great falls) due to the fact that Alexandria and DC’s sewage sometimes overflows during rain storms; however, we are not aware of any reason why you cannot swim in the upper Potomac.
